The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against two officers with the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) following the arrest of a 40-year-old man in Oakville.
The investigation stems from an October 18th, 2025 incident at a home near Great Lakes Boulevard and Rebecca Street, where officers attempted to apprehend the man under the Mental Health Act after reports he had allegedly attacked motorists and brandished a knife. The SIU says Tactical Rescue Unit officers tried to negotiate a peaceful surrender for several hours before deploying distraction devices and conducted energy weapons as the man attempted to retreat into his home.
During the arrest, one officer tackled the man to prevent him from re-entering the residence, and additional CEW discharges were used while officers attempted to gain control. The man was later treated in hospital for a deep laceration to his scalp.
In a report released at the conclusion of the probe, the SIU Director found the officers had lawful grounds to apprehend the man and that the force used did not exceed what was reasonably necessary in the circumstances. The case has now been closed.
