Students with the Halton Catholic District School Board have created thousands of handmade valentines to thank Canadian Veterans through the annual Valentines for Vets program.
Known locally as Hearts for Heroes, the initiative saw participation from 76 classes this year, with close to 3,000 valentines prepared for delivery to Veterans Affairs Canada’s head office in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. From there, the cards will be repackaged and distributed to active-duty military members and Veterans living in long-term care facilities.
Veterans Affairs Canada invites schools, individuals, and organizations across the country to take part in the program each year as a way to recognize and thank veterans for their service. HCDSB has been recognized as one of the program’s largest contributors, and this year the school community also created valentines for local first responders to expand its impact.
The valentines will now be distributed to service members and veterans across Canada as part of the national initiative.
