United Way Halton & Hamilton is marking National 211 Day on this week by highlighting the growing demand for the 211 service as residents across Halton and Hamilton face increasing housing instability, mental health challenges, and economic pressures.
211 is a free, confidential, non-emergency information and referral service that connects people to social, government, and community supports 365 days a year by phone, text, and online, and is available in more than 150 languages. Callers are connected with a trained navigator who listens, helps identify needs, and provides referrals to appropriate local services, including housing supports, mental health resources, income assistance, and caregiver supports. Beyond individual assistance, 211 also maintains Canada’s largest database of community and government services and helps identify emerging needs and service gaps.
United Way Centraide Canada is a founding partner of 211 in Canada, supporting its expansion nationwide through funding, leadership, and advocacy. As living costs rise and housing shortages persist, the service continues to act as a key connector for people seeking help.
“211 is often the first place people turn when they don’t know where else to go,” says Brad Park, President and CEO of United Way Halton & Hamilton. “It offers something incredibly powerful in moments of stress. A human connection, clear information, and a path forward.”
Local 211 data from 2025 shows increasing pressure on residents in the region. The service received 8,063 contacts from Halton and Hamilton, an 11% increase from the previous year, identifying 9,582 distinct needs, up 14%. Housing supports, mental health supports, and information and referral services remained the top three needs, with housing-related concerns accounting for 17.5% of all identified needs, up from 16.6% in 2024. Adults represented 45% of contacts, while older adults accounted for 9%.
United Way Halton & Hamilton says the data helps inform governments, funders, and service providers as they plan and coordinate responses to community needs.
“Local 211 data gives us a real-time window into what people are struggling with right now,” adds Park. “When we see rising contacts and growing housing-related needs, it’s a clear signal that the pressures facing our community are intensifying, and that coordinated, accessible support is more important than ever.”
211 Day takes place every year on February 11th.
