New Tecumseth is adjusting its winter road maintenance operations due to a provincewide shortage of winter salt, shifting to a sand-salt mixture in urban areas.
According to the town, the temporary change is intended to responsibly manage limited salt supplies while continuing to keep roads safe and passable. Officials noted that extreme cold temperatures also reduce the effectiveness of salt alone, making the sand-salt blend a practical alternative during current conditions.
The Town says it will return to its standard winter maintenance approach once provincial supply issues are resolved. Transportation Operations crews will continue regular winter maintenance activities throughout the season.
