A Cold Warning has been issued for Halton Region, with public health officials urging residents to take precautions as temperatures are expected to drop to dangerous levels.
Halton Region Public Health says the warning takes effect starting Friday, January 23rd, and will remain in place until temperatures rise above –15°C without wind chill or conditions improve. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, which can lead to serious health consequences. While anyone can be affected, those at higher risk include seniors, infants and young children, people with limited access to adequate shelter, and individuals who work or exercise outdoors. Residents are encouraged to check in on family members, friends and neighbours who may be vulnerable, particularly those living alone.
Public health officials are also reminding residents to plan ahead by checking weather forecasts, dressing in warm layered clothing, covering exposed skin, and watching for signs of cold-related illness. Motorists are advised to prepare for winter driving by keeping a car survival kit on hand, while homeowners should ensure pipes near exterior walls or in basements and crawl spaces are properly heated and ventilated.
Anyone who sees someone sleeping outdoors or who needs support is encouraged to contact Halton Region by calling 1-866-442-5866 or 311, or by emailing outreach@halton.ca. More information on cold warnings, winter safety tips, and housing supports is available here, with weather updates provided through Environment Canada and the WeatherCAN app.
