The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is warning residents about a troubling rise in distraction thefts targeting seniors across Halton Region and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Police say suspects typically approach seniors in public places and engage them under false pretences, such as asking for directions or requesting prayers for a sick family member. The suspects then distract victims by hugging them or placing inexpensive costume jewelry on them as a so-called gift, while secretly removing valuable jewelry already being worn.
HRPS reports a spike in these incidents throughout early and late fall 2025, with cases continuing into the new year. Victims are most often targeted while walking in urban areas or when approached roadside. Suspects are usually female and often exit a vehicle to initiate contact.
Police are urging residents to share safety tips with senior family members and friends, including staying alert in public spaces, avoiding the display of expensive or sentimental jewelry, and not allowing strangers into their personal space. Officers warn that attempts to place objects on someone should be treated as a red flag, and that thieves may also target wallets, purses, or phones.
Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a distraction theft is asked to call 911 immediately and try to remember as many details as possible about the suspect and any vehicle involved. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
