A local food drive is being organized to help address a growing shortage at the Milton Halal Food Bank.
Ward 3 Town Councillor Adil Khalqi is hosting the food drive on Saturday, January 24th, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Pak Foods, located at 100 Nipissing Road. Donations collected during the event will support the Milton Halal Food Bank, which serves families in Milton and the broader Halton region who are experiencing food insecurity.
The food bank says demand for its services continues to rise while donations and funding have declined.
“Milton Halal Food Bank serves families in Milton and the broader Halton region who are experiencing food insecurity, many of whom are vulnerable due to low income, job loss, or rising living costs,” says Irshad Ahmad, a representative for the food bank. “Economic challenges have led to a sharp decline in donations, and we have not received grant funding for the past three to four years. At the same time, the demand for food assistance has continued to grow.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the food bank supported more than 300 families each month, but today relies almost entirely on community donations. Ahmad says food shortages are becoming more frequent, making community-led initiatives like this food drive critical to meeting local needs.
Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items during the event to help ensure families have access to nutritious food.
