A Milton resident is among eight people arrested following a demonstration at Toronto City Hall that led to multiple charges, including allegations of assaults on police officers.
Toronto Police say officers were called to Nathan Phillips Square, near Queen Street West and Bay Street, at roughly 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10th, after a demonstration and counter-demonstration drew a large crowd. Police report that officers gave directions in an effort to maintain public safety, but disturbances escalated, with participants allegedly assaulting one another and police officers.
Among those arrested was a 25-year-old Miltonian, who now faces several charges:
- Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon
- Throw Explosive at Person with Intent to Cause Bodily Harm
- Carry Concealed Weapon
- Weapons Dangerous
- Common Nuisance/Endanger Lives or Safety of Public
- Disguise with Intent
- Member of an Unlawful Assembly While Masked
Toronto police say a total of 29 charges were laid against eight individuals.
Police say nine people were initially arrested at the scene, but one person was later released unconditionally without charges. Three of the accused, including the Milton resident, are alleged to have assaulted police officers during the incident.
