The Halton District School Board (HDSB) is inviting the community to take part in a virtual public information session focused on the development of the 2026 – 2027 school year budget.
The session is scheduled for Monday, January 19th, at 7:00 p.m., and will outline how the school board is funded, how resources are allocated, and how parents, students, staff and community members can provide feedback on budget decisions. The presentation will be streamed live online, and a recording will remain available afterward. Registration is not required.
According to the board, the education sector has faced significant funding pressures in recent years, and HDSB projects student enrolment will continue to decline over the next two years due to aging neighbourhoods and slower growth in new development areas across Halton. Since enrolment directly drives provincial education funding, fewer students will result in reduced revenue for the board.
HDSB has budgeted for a $7.1 million deficit in the current school year and, under provincial regulations, must eliminate that deficit for the 2026 – 2027 school year. Balancing the budget will require addressing the existing shortfall while also identifying further reductions tied to continued enrolment declines.
Community members are encouraged to review available budget information on the HDSB Budget Input webpage and submit questions in advance through the Public Information Session Question Form by Monday, January 12th, at 4:00 p.m. Questions will be addressed during the session and through a document that has been posted online. Additional opportunities to provide feedback will be shared following the session.
