The Town of Halton Hills has received $51,000 in provincial funding to support firefighter safety and cancer prevention initiatives through the local fire department.
This funding was awarded through Ontario’s Fire Safety Grant Program and will support the care, maintenance and inspection of firefighter protective gear. It will fund annual independent inspections, cleaning and repairs of firefighter bunker gear to help ensure equipment remains effective and to reduce exposure to cancer-causing contaminants. The grant will also support a particulate-blocking hood exchange program, providing firefighters with a clean hood for each fire response, with used hoods professionally laundered before reuse to limit carcinogen exposure to the head and neck. Town officials say both initiatives are aimed at improving long-term firefighter health and maintaining compliance with recognized safety standards.
“The Town invests heavily to ensure that our firefighters have personal protective equipment to carry out their often-dangerous duties,” says Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor These funds from the province will help test the ongoing performance and reliability of their gear.”
