Milton’s Town Council has approved a comprehensive Housing Strategy and Action Plan aimed at improving housing affordability and preparing for the town’s rapid growth.
The strategy was approved at a recent Council meeting, with staff directed to begin implementation and report progress through annual updates.
As one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities, Milton is projected to reach a population of 400,000 by 2051, requiring approximately 88,000 new housing units. A recent Housing Needs Assessment found the town’s rental vacancy rate is below 3%, the average home price is about $1.1 million, and 9% of residents live in housing that is unaffordable, inadequate, or unsuitable.
“This housing strategy will help ensure that everyone in Milton has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing,” says Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “We can’t do this alone—but we’re committed to taking action, building partnerships, engaging other levels of government, and preparing for current and future housing needs.”
The strategy outlines a long-term vision with goals, targets, and actions focused on increasing housing supply, expanding housing diversity, improving affordability and access to below-market housing, strengthening collaboration with government and community partners, and ensuring monitoring and accountability. Short-term priorities include setting housing targets, clarifying roles with Halton Region, and introducing more flexible policies through the Official Plan review, such as relaxing parking requirements for certain housing types.
