The Conservation Halton Board has reviewed the province’s latest proposal connected to Bill 68, legislation that includes changes to the Conservation Authorities Act and the creation of the Ontario Provincial Conservation Agency.
This proposal also seeks feedback on consolidating Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities into regional bodies and is open for public comment for 45 days. In its discussion on November 20th, the Board said it welcomed the province’s intention to improve resources and create consistent service standards, but noted that more information is needed to fully understand the benefits and implications. Conservation Halton says it is requesting additional details and expects to submit a formal response soon.
The organization highlighted its focus on innovation, digital solutions, strong local governance, and responsive client service. It says streamlined permit processes, performance metrics, and timely reviews help ensure effective service for government partners, stakeholders, and the community, while broader programs continue to adapt to evolving needs and priorities.
If finalized, Conservation Halton would join the Western Lake Ontario Regional Conservation Authority. This new agency would extend along the western Lake Ontario shoreline from Niagara through Halton and Peel, encompassing urban and rural watersheds that support the Greater Toronto–Hamilton corridor. Primarily based on the western portion of the Northern Lake Ontario and Niagara River Secondary Watershed.
