The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is reminding residents to stay alert as reports of pickpocketing rise during the busy holiday season.
A video was shared on social media by the HRPS to highlight how quickly the thieves can swipe their target.
Last year, between mid-November and early January, officers responded to 110 reports of phone thefts targeting shoppers in crowded areas. Police say pickpockets often work in groups, blend easily into malls and community events, and use distraction techniques to steal phones, wallets, and other valuables without being noticed.
Shoppers are urged to keep valuables in front pockets, avoid distractions like earbuds, and never leave items unattended.
Anyone who discovers a theft is asked to contact Halton Police’s non-emergency line at 905-825-4777.
