The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) is reporting a rising number of students arriving at school without warm clothing, food, or basic necessities as colder weather approaches.
The foundation says simple items such as winter coats and boots can make a significant difference in helping students stay focused and ready to learn.
HLF has already supported more than 1,000 students this school year, with requests increasing due to financial pressures facing families across Halton. During the 2024–25 school year, the organization responded to 3,600 requests for assistance, nearly 20% more than the previous year. Staff work with principals, social workers, and school teams to identify students who need immediate help.
Parents and school leaders say supports such as clothing, food, and gift cards offer meaningful help to families experiencing financial insecurity. HLF notes that November and December are typically the busiest months for requests.
Residents, businesses, and community members are encouraged to donate to the ‘No Student Left Behind’ campaign, which provides winter clothing, school supplies, food, and emergency financial assistance to Halton District School Board students.
