A new national survey from Léger and United Way Centraide Canada shows that financial stress is taking a growing toll on Canadians, and it’s hitting close to home in Halton.
According to the 2025 Financial Anxiety Survey, 55% of Canadians say thinking about money makes them anxious, and 42% could only cover basic expenses for less than a month if they lost their main income. Many also report sleepless nights, family tension, and difficulty focusing at work due to financial worries.
Local data reveals similar concerns. In Halton, one in eight residents live below the low-income measure, while in Hamilton, that figure is 11%. Child poverty remains above 12% in both areas, and the living wage needed to afford basic necessities has climbed to $26/hour in Halton and $21.30/hour in Hamilton, both well above Ontario’s minimum wage. Food insecurity is also on the rise, with food program usage up 25% in Halton since 2023.
“Financial anxiety is a crisis that goes far beyond people’s wallets,” says Brad Park, President & CEO of United Way Halton & Hamilton. “It affects mental health, relationships, and community stability. Families here are feeling those same pressures every day.”
United Way Halton & Hamilton supports 38 programs aimed at helping individuals build financial stability, including financial literacy workshops, food and housing supports, and mental health services. Through its Poverty to Possibility initiative, the organization helps residents move from crisis to stability. Those needing help can contact 211. It’s a free, confidential service connecting residents to local supports 24/7 in over 150 languages.
