The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has launched a new social media campaign aimed at educating residents about e-scooter safety and the rules of the road.
The first video in the series debuted this week, with more to follow in the coming weeks on the Service’s X, Facebook, and Instagram accounts. The campaign targets parents, riders, and motorists with practical tips to help keep Halton’s roads safe for everyone.
E-scooters (motorized scooters designed for standing) must meet specific requirements under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act. They can have no more than two wheels (up to 17 inches), must include working brakes, front and rear lights, and a bell or horn, and cannot exceed 24 km/h in speed or 500 watts in motor power. E-scooters that exceed these limits could be classified as motor vehicles, requiring proper licensing, insurance, and safety inspection.
“As e-scooter use continues to grow, so do questions about where and how they can be used safely,” says Staff Sergeant Ryan Smith of the HRPS Road Safety Unit. “Our priority as a police service is and remains ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users. Education is a key first step.”
E-scooters are only legal in municipalities that have passed by-laws allowing their use, and riders must follow all provincial and local regulations. That includes a minimum age of 16, helmet use for those under 18, and prohibitions against sidewalk riding, carrying passengers, or modifying scooters for extra speed. Impaired operation by drugs or alcohol remains a criminal offence.
Residents are encouraged to review full e-scooter regulations here.
