The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS), working alongside Peel Regional Police and Canada Post, have helped recover 465 pieces of stolen mail worth more than $400,000 after a months-long investigation into a widespread mail theft ring.
This joint investigation began in April after reports of residential mailbox thefts across Peel, with disruption also impacting surrounding communities, including Halton. On September 8th and 9th, search warrants were executed at several Mississauga residences, where police recovered hundreds of stolen items, including 255 cheques, 182 credit cards, 35 pieces of government identification, and 20 gift cards.
Eight men were arrested and now face a combined 344 Criminal Code charges tied to property crimes. The accused were held for bail hearings at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. Peel Police are also consulting with the Canada Border Services Agency to determine whether removal proceedings may be pursued for some of the accused.
Police emphasize that mail theft remains a serious issue that can lead to fraud, identity theft, and other financial crimes. They encourage residents to collect mail promptly, report suspicious activity, and consider using community mailboxes or secure delivery options when possible.
