Halton Hills Fire Department at Eighth Line and 10 Sideroad
The Halton Hills Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to recognize Fire Prevention Week™!
Until October 11th, this year’s FPW campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” will focus on educating the public about the importance of safely buying, charging, using and recycling lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable, offering large amounts of energy and a long-life span but can also be dangerous if not managed with care.
“There are numerous, everyday items such as laptops and smartphones that use lithium-ion batteries,” says Fire Prevention Officer Jason Blackmere. “There is a real danger for these batteries to overheat, cause fire or even explode if they are not handled properly.”
Fire departments across the country are encouraging homeowners to:
- Do your research before purchase. Look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab to ensure the product meets important safety standards.
- Only use the charging cables that came with the product and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Charge your device on a hard surface, not under a pillow or on a couch.
- Don’t overcharge your device. Once charged, unplug it or remove the battery.
- Dispose of lithium-ion batteries properly and do no place in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could catch fire. Visit call2recycle.org to find a local recycling location.
