The Ontario government is welcoming a major investment from Northern Transformer Corporation (NTC), which is putting nearly $207 million into building a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Innisfil.
The project marks NTC’s expansion into the large power transformer market and will create 151 new jobs, while helping strengthen Ontario’s energy supply chain.
The investment, supported by $10.5 million in provincial funding through the Invest Ontario Fund, will allow NTC to manufacture and test high-voltage transformers capable of handling up to 500kV and 750MVA. These transformers are vital for large-scale projects like data centres, mining operations, and steel manufacturing, with components sourced from Ontario-based suppliers to reduce reliance on foreign imports.
Local and provincial leaders say the project is both an economic and energy win.
“This investment will not only bring over 150 good-paying jobs to our community, but it will also strengthen Ontario’s energy sector and supply chains for years to come,” says Barrie–Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin.
Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Stephen Lecce, added that the expansion “is a big win for Canadian workers, a big win for our grid, and a clear sign that Ontario is ready to lead the nation’s clean energy future.”
Founded in 1981, Northern Transformer already operates a facility in Maple employing 150 people. The new Innisfil location is expected to boost Ontario’s role in grid modernization and electrification efforts across North America while furthering the province’s commitment to resilient, Ontario-made supply chains.
