This fall, families across Bradford West Gwillimbury (BWG) are being encouraged to walk, bike, or wheel their way to school through On the Move, a local initiative promoting healthier children and safer communities.
Led by the BWG On the Move working group, the program provides safety tips, trip-planning tools, and other resources to help families and schools support active travel. The campaign is part of International Walk to School Month (IWALK), which celebrates active transportation like walking, biking, scootering, or using a wheelchair.
To kick things off, Mayor James Leduc and Members of Council will host a flag raising and proclamation on Wednesday, September 24th, at 4:15 p.m. at BWG’s Municipal Office. The community-wide celebration continues on the morning of October 1st, when students across BWG will take part in Walk and Wheel to School Day. Schools will mark the occasion with their own activities, supported by town staff and working group members.
“On the Move is about more than just getting from point A to point B. It’s about building healthy habits, reducing traffic around our schools, and creating safer streets for our children,” says Mayor Leduc. “When families take part, we’re not only supporting our kids’ well-being, we’re strengthening our entire community.”
Community members are encouraged to take part and to be extra cautious in school zones on October 1st to ensure a safe journey for students.
