The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is warning residents about a phone scam in which fraudsters are spoofing the official HRPS phone number to trick victims.
Police say the scammers claim to be officers and tell people they are listed as an emergency contact for a sibling in China. In some cases, callers attempt to create urgency or fear, which may lead victims to provide personal information or money.
HRPS reminds residents that if they are contacted by a real officer, they will always provide their name, badge number, and occurrence number. Officers will never ask for money over the phone.
Anyone who receives such a call is advised to hang up immediately and report the incident to Halton Police.
