With the new school year just around the corner, the Town of Milton is reminding drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to stay alert and follow road safety rules.
Starting Monday, August 25th, school zone flashing lights will be activated, requiring motorists to reduce their speed to 40 km/h near designated schools when lights are flashing.
Families are encouraged to use pedestrian crossings, which may include push-button rectangular rapid flashing lights to help ensure safe passage. The Town also highlights the important role of crossing guards, who help children and families cross near elementary schools. Drivers must stop when a guard raises their sign and wait until both the guard and pedestrians are clear before proceeding.
Some schools also have designated Kiss and Ride zones, designed to reduce congestion and improve safety. These areas may be prioritized for kindergarten students and children with special needs, and Town by-law staff will monitor them using licence plate recognition (LPR).
The safety message is reinforced through Project Safe Start, the Halton Regional Police Service’s annual back-to-school traffic campaign, which also launches August 25th and runs until Friday, September 5th. The initiative focuses on enforcing road safety with attention on speeding, stop signs, school buses, seat belts, and school zones.
“Each September, it’s important to be alert as roads get busier with some of our youngest road users,” says Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “Let’s be road wise and follow traffic rules so that we can protect students, their families, and our entire community.”
