As students prepare for the upcoming school year, the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) is calling on the community to help ensure every Halton District School Board (HDSB) student has the essentials they need to succeed – like food, clothing, and school supplies.
The Back to School campaign shares stories like Louisa’s, a student who arrived at school carrying her books in a grocery bag and began to withdraw socially. With HLF’s support, Louisa received a proper backpack filled with supplies, helping her feel included and confident once again. It’s a reminder that something as simple as a backpack can carry more than just books – it can carry a child’s self-esteem.
HLF responded to a record 3,600 requests during the 2024–25 school year, a 20% increase from the year before, as more families struggle with rising costs. Instead of providing pre-packed supplies, the Foundation offers gift cards so families can buy exactly what their children need (such as a backpack, shoes, or healthy snacks) while preserving their dignity and choice.
“We want every student to begin the school year with confidence and the tools they need to thrive,” says Marc Clare, CEO of HLF. “But for at least one in ten families in our community, the basic costs of returning to school—like backpacks, lunch, or proper shoes—are out of reach. With the support of generous donors and local partners, we can respond quickly to ensure no student is held back by circumstances beyond their control. When students have what they need, they feel seen, supported, and ready to succeed.”
