Conservation Halton has received $242,000 in federal funding to support the development of a new Grindstone Creek Watershed Nutrient Management Plan, aimed at improving water quality in Hamilton Harbour.
The funding comes from the Canada Water Agency through the Great Lakes Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative and was announced last week at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington.
The plan will identify key sources of phosphorus in the watershed and recommend targeted actions to reduce nuisance algal blooms and support the long-term health of the harbour and Lake Ontario. Water monitoring has shown that Grindstone Creek is a significant contributor of phosphorus, making this initiative a key step toward Hamilton Harbour’s Area of Concern restoration goals.
“Thanks to the funding provided by the Canada Water Agency, Conservation Halton will develop a watershed-scale nutrient management plan for the Grindstone Creek,” says Chandra Sharma, President and CEO of Conservation Halton. “For over two decades, Conservation Halton has been actively collaborating with all levels of government and the local community to advance freshwater science, monitoring, and restoration in the Great Lakes Areas of Concern. This initiative is critical in continuing to advance the identification of key nutrient sources, assess trends, and prioritize areas for targeted interventions on a watershed scale to address water quality and algal blooms in Hamilton Harbour.”
The new plan complements Conservation Halton’s ongoing Grindstone Creek Watershed Management Plan and the Grindstone and Indian Creek Water Quality Project. Through data analysis, advanced modeling, and community engagement, the project will help inform future municipal water planning and strengthen protection for Lake Ontario’s coastal wetlands.
Conservation Halton is one of 26 organizations to receive part of the Canada Water Agency’s $9.3 million investment in freshwater initiatives across the country.
