Maplehurst Correctional Complex and Vanier Centre for Women in Milton
Milton is set to see a significant infrastructure upgrade with the planned expansion of the Vanier Centre for Women as part of a $180 million investment by the Ontario government to improve correctional facilities across the province.
The initiative will create 150 new beds provincewide, with Milton among the three key locations chosen for expansion alongside Thorold and Sudbury.
“Ontario is modernizing its procurement processes and using innovative construction methods to help speed up the delivery of essential infrastructure,” says Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “By expanding correctional facilities in Thorold, Sudbury and Milton, our government is enhancing the safety, capacity and sustainability of the province’s correctional system. Under the leadership of Premier Ford, we are delivering on our more than $200 billion plan to build the infrastructure our province needs to support strong and safe communities, keep workers on the job and drive economic growth.”
The Vanier Centre’s expansion is designed to give frontline staff more space to do their jobs safely while providing inmates with access to enhanced rehabilitation programs, such as literacy, job skills, and technology training. Bird Construction Inc. has been awarded the contract to design and build the modular expansion, with construction slated to begin in 2026.
This development supports Milton’s role in the province’s broader plan to modernize correctional services and maintain public safety, while also contributing to job creation and local economic growth.
