Anglers of all ages are invited to cast a line at the Mayor’s Fishing Derby in Acton.
This family-friendly event is part of the ongoing Fairy Lake Revival initiative, a community effort to restore and protect the historic mill pond’s natural ecosystem.
“This fun event is one of the many projects we’re undertaking to help the rehabilitate Fairy Lake”, says Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor. “The revival of this historic mill pond reflects council’s vision of a nature-rich, healthy Town.”
A key goal of this year’s derby is the removal of the Round Goby, an invasive fish species identified in Fairy Lake in 2024. The species poses a threat to native aquatic life by outcompeting local fish and eating their eggs. To help, prizes will be awarded for the longest fish and the most gobies caught, with age categories to ensure fun for all.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own gear and buckets, though a beginner’s fishing zone, free bait (while supplies last), and a tackle loan booth will be available. Fishing licences are required – learn more or apply here.
Beyond the derby, families can enjoy canoe and kayak rentals by Holy Cow Canoe Company, plus kid-friendly nature activities, environmental education booths, and interactive fun like scavenger hunts and button-making.
Presented in partnership with Credit Valley Conservation and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the Mayor’s Fishing Derby offers a unique way to enjoy the outdoors while helping protect Fairy Lake – one cast at a time.
It’s happening Saturday, July 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Fairy Lake beside Prospect Park in Acton.
