The Conservation Halton Foundation has received a major boost to its conservation efforts with a $101,891 grant from the Greenbelt Foundation.
This funding will support the expansion of Conservation Halton’s Water Quality & Habitat Improvement Program (WQHIP), which is a long-standing initiative that provides private landowners with technical advice, education, and financial support to carry out environmental restoration projects on their properties.
It will allow Conservation Halton to conduct more than 30 site visits and work with over 15 Greenbelt landowners to implement projects that improve water quality and wildlife habitat, while promoting sustainable land management. A dedicated Project Technical Advisory Committee will guide each project, ensuring that the recommendations are tailored to each property and its ecological needs.
“Our deepest thanks to the Greenbelt Foundation for supporting our goal of building a more resilient future for our watershed and our communities within the Greenbelt,” says Chandra Sharma, President and CEO of Conservation Halton. “Collaborations like this enable us to engage with private landowners to adopt practices to help restore ecosystems, protect at-risk species, and adopt sustainable practices.”
To date, the WQHIP program has helped complete projects such as culvert replacements, stream restoration, and the creation of native wildflower meadows – including a 300m² meadow that supports an on-site apiary. Outreach has already begun through mail-outs, workshops, community events, and landowner visits, with more efforts planned in the coming months to raise awareness of the program across the Greenbelt region.
Since 1994, Conservation Halton has provided technical and financial assistance to support the adoption of best management practices that protect local ecosystems.
