You can celebrate Canada Day out on the water for free with Family Fishing Week.
The Ontario government is inviting all Canadian residents to fish for free across the province from June 28th to July 6th. This special opportunity is designed to encourage families, first-timers, and seasoned anglers to get outside and enjoy the province’s lakes, rivers, and streams.
“This week is the perfect chance to gather with friends and family to reel in new experiences and explore all the great fishing opportunities our province has to offer,” says Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources. “I encourage fishing enthusiasts and first-timers alike to cast a line in celebration of Canada – the True North, strong and free, and the place we call home.”
Family Fishing Week is the final free fishing period of the year and a chance to experience one of Ontario’s most cherished outdoor traditions without a licence. While fishing is free, all conservation limits, size restrictions, and sanctuary rules still apply, and participants must carry government-issued ID showing their name and date of birth.
Recreational fishing contributes over $1.75 billion annually to Ontario’s economy and supports jobs and tourism throughout the province. Initiatives like this remove barriers for newcomers and promote Ontario’s rich angling heritage.
Outside of designated free fishing periods, most residents aged 18 to 64 require an Outdoors Card and fishing licence, available online or in person at participating ServiceOntario locations.
