A Burlington man has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder following the discovery of human remains belonging to Shalini Singh, a woman reported missing in December.
42-year-old Jeffery Smith was the common-law partner of Singh at the time. He was taken into custody without incident on Friday, June 20th. He is also charged with Indignity to Human Remains and made his first court appearance the following day, on Saturday, June 21st.
Singh was last seen on the evening of December 4th, 2024, and reported missing by her family on December 10th. Hamilton Police launched a months-long investigation, gathering evidence that suggested Singh was the victim of foul play and removed from her residence via the building’s garbage disposal system.
Using GPS data, police identified a targeted area at the Glanbrook Landfill Site, where a search began on February 24th. On May 21st, partial human remains were discovered. DNA testing later confirmed those remains were Singh’s.
Police say the landfill search is still ongoing and is expected to wrap up by Friday, June 27th. Meanwhile, the Singh family has requested privacy as they process the tragic news.
