The South Simcoe Police Service is issuing a strong warning to the public about the serious risks and consequences of carrying or misusing replica firearms.
This comes after multiple recent incidents involving realistic-looking imitation handguns, including a troubling case in Bradford West Gwillimbury involving two youths reported to be in possession of a firearm on Monday, June 16th.
Following an investigation, a search warrant was executed the next day, leading members of the Street Crime Unit to recover a realistic replica handgun. Police have since been working closely with the involved family to provide education and awareness about the dangers of imitation weapons. Due to the involvement of minors, no further details have been released.
Police stress that even when a firearm is fake, its appearance can cause significant alarm, prompting emergency responses and posing risks to public safety. In some cases, these situations can escalate quickly and lead to life-threatening consequences.
The South Simcoe Police Service continues to engage with schools, youth, and families to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents in the future. Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk to their children about the dangers of replica firearms and to help foster a safe, respectful community.
