Throughout June, the Town of Halton Hills is inviting residents to take part in a curated series of arts and culture events honouring Indigenous History Month.
Hosted in partnership with the Halton Hills Public Library and Create Halton Hills, the month-long programming will showcase the traditional and contemporary creativity of Indigenous Peoples through art, literature, film, and hands-on experiences.
“Ten years ago, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission published its Final Report, including 94 Calls to Action,” says Mayor Ann Lawlor. “While much work has been done in this time to promote awareness and education, it is imperative that we continue to listen to Indigenous voices to advance reconciliation. We appreciate the artists who are sharing their stories and helping us learn and grow.”
Program highlights include:
- Indigenous Art Exhibition (June 2nd – 29th) – Explore traditional and modern works from the Town’s Art Collection at the Library and Cultural Centre’s Sisnett Lobby.
- Brianna’s Beading (June 2nd – 29th) – View intricate beadwork by Brianna Laforme of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, with select pieces available for purchase.
- Children’s Author Visit (June 21st) – Hear Jennifer Faria, Indigenous author and illustrator, read her book Raven, Rabbit, Deer, followed by a Q&A at the Georgetown Library Branch.
- TIFF OnScreen: So Surreal: Behind the Masks (June 27th) – A free screening at the John Elliott Theatre exploring the ties between Surrealist art and Indigenous ceremonial masks.
- Beading Workshops (June 28th) – Learn traditional beading from Dan Secord with workshops for children (ages 4+) and youth/adults (ages 14+) at the Library and Cultural Centre Studio.
Everyone has a role to play in reconciliation.
