Milton residents will soon have the chance to better their skills both on and off the basketball court.
Dribble Dreams Foundation is returning with their now annual basketball camp. The program has served hundreds of youth in the community, across the Greater Toronto Area, and has even reached into poverty-stricken areas in Kenya.
Speaking with CEO and Co-Founder, Ismail Hassan, he explains the reason why basketball is the perfect building block for children.
They were able to raise over $10,000 for their Kenya initiative, where the group was to able to provide valuable resources and programming for the community, including basketballs, clothing, food, and school supplies. A second trip to Africa has been planned for 2025, as they’ll be heading to Uganda in December.
In its first year, the program was cost-free and welcomed 100 kids to the court. Last year, they upped their numbers and provided a girls-only option. Now, Hassan is aiming for 250 young athletes of all skill levels to learn the basics, improve their talents, and better themselves off the court as well.
The program will run for six Saturdays this summer, starting on Saturday, July 5th at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Secondary School in Milton. The sessions will be separated by age, with 6 to 9-year-olds playing together; 10 to 13-year-old; and, 14 to 18-year-olds. All genders will play together in one gym, while the all-girls sessions will be held in a separate gym. All sessions will be led by experienced basketball coaches and players.
Hassan is also expecting guest appearances from local dignitaries, including Burlington North – Milton West MP (and Olympic Gold Medalist) Adam van Koeverden, as well as Town Councillor for Ward 3, Adil Khalqi.
