More than 450 student athletes from across the Halton District School Board (HDSB) will take centre stage at the 38th annual Special Athletics Track Meet next month in Oakville.
What began in 1987 with just 12 athletes has grown into a major event with participants engaging in activities such as 100-metre races, basketball, soccer, T-ball, bowling, obstacle courses, and sensory stations. Friends, families, staff, and volunteers – including student helpers from Emily Carr Public School – will be on hand to support the athletes, with the Optimist Clubs of Halton Hills, Milton, Oakville, and Burlington providing food and refreshments.
“Every year, the Special Athletics Track Meet offers a meaningful opportunity for students with diverse abilities to come together to connect with peers, showcase their skills and have fun,” says Curtis Ennis, Director of Education for the HDSB. “The energy, teamwork and joy that fill the day are a direct result of the collaboration between students, staff, families and volunteers, and a reflection of our commitment to providing inclusive learning environments.”
It’s happening on Friday, June 13th at Garth Webb Secondary School in Oakville. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with opening ceremonies at 10:00 a.m. and a closing parade at 1:00 p.m.
