The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has joined the fight against dangerous driving across the GTA as part of Project ERASE – Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere – a multijurisdictional initiative targeting street racing, stunt driving, and illegal car rallies.
Joined by Peel, Toronto, York, Hamilton, and OPP forces, the campaign uses high-visibility enforcement and strategic operations to curb reckless driving.
“Street racing is a reckless and illegal act that endangers lives,” says Staff Sergeant Ryan Smith, Halton Regional Police, Traffic Services. “The thrill of speed is never worth the irreversible consequences it can bring which includes serious injury, loss of life, and criminal charges. Through education and enforcement, the Halton Regional Police Service is proud to collaborate with our partner agencies in an effort to reduce dangerous driving practices on our streets and highways.”
Peel Police says that since 2022, street racing charges in their region have jumped 154%, with over 2,100 charges laid this year alone. In just the past two weeks, police have seized 32 vehicles and issued more than 400 charges, including 26 for stunt driving.
Halton residents are urged to report aggressive drivers to help keep roads safe. Tips and evidence can be submitted through Crime Stoppers, Road Safety Services, or the Road Watch portal.
With vehicle impoundments, license suspensions, and fines reaching $800 for spectators at illegal rallies, police across the region are sending a clear message: street racing will not be tolerated – in Halton or beyond.
