With the May long weekend almost here, the Town of Halton Hills is reminding residents that the use and sale of family-style, low-hazard fireworks is prohibited under the current fireworks by-law.
The only exception is sparklers, which remain permitted.
This by-law, introduced in 2023, was established after extensive community engagement and follows the lead of other municipalities that have implemented similar bans. The move was driven by concerns over safety, environmental impact, and the well-being of animals and wildlife.
“The issue of banning fireworks was one that residents were very engaged with,” says Mayor Ann Lawlor. “Ultimately Council chose for reasons of safety, the environment and protection of animals and wildlife, to prohibit family fireworks. Knowing what we know now, I feel this was absolutely the right decision.”
The by-law does not apply to professional display fireworks used at large public events. These require a permit and can only be discharged by a federally licensed fireworks technician.
Victoria Day will be on Monday, May 19th.
