Halton Region Public Health is warning residents about potential measles exposures after confirming a case of the disease linked to two locations in Burlington and Milton.
The individual with measles may have exposed others on Saturday, April 26th at the Halton Family Health Centre, located at 2951 Walkers Line Unit B in Burlington from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and again on Sunday, April 27th at the Halton Medix Clinic, located at 100 Bronte Street South Unit 2 in Milton from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Public Health officials are urging anyone who visited those locations during the specified times to check their immunization records.
“Measles is a serious and highly contagious illness, but it is preventable with vaccination,” says Dr. Deepika Lobo, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region. “We are reminding residents who may have been exposed to review their immunization records and monitor for symptoms. Vaccination remains the best protection, and we urge all residents, especially families with young children, to ensure their immunizations are current.”
People born on or after January 1st, 1970 should have received two doses of the measles vaccine. Those who are unvaccinated, immunocompromised, pregnant, or under the age of one are especially vulnerable and should immediately contact Halton Public Health or a health care provider. Anyone who develops symptoms such as fever, cough, red eyes, or a blotchy rash is advised to call ahead before visiting a medical facility to reduce risk to others.
Measles symptoms can appear 7 to 21 days after exposure and include small white spots in the mouth, fatigue, and a spreading rash. Affected individuals should monitor for symptoms until at least mid-May.
