Premier Ford, 2021
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced he will call an early provincial election next week, allowing Ontarians to vote by the end of February.
Speaking at a press conference in Brampton on Friday, January 24th, Ford cited U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods as a key reason for the early election.
The premier, currently leading a majority government, emphasized the need for a new mandate to protect Ontario’s economy and fight against the tariffs, which could take effect as early as Saturday, February 1st.
The election date is expected to be Thursday, February 27th, over a year before the scheduled June 2026 election.
Ford criticized federal leadership, pledging to provide strong provincial leadership and spend billions to secure Ontarians’ livelihoods during this economic challenge.
