The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is investigating a distraction style theft of jewelry in Oakville.
On Tuesday, November 5th, at roughly 2:30 p.m., an elderly woman was walking in the area of Lakeshore Road and Nelson Street when approached by a lone female suspect.
The suspect showed the victim some fake golden jewelry, including a large gold ring, gold bracelet, and a gold chain. The suspect then tried to hug the victim and placed the chain around her neck and walked away. A short time later, the victim realized her own necklace had been stolen.
The suspect is described by the HRPS as:
- female (unknown race)
- 20 to 30 years old
- heavy build
This is the third similar style distraction theft that the HRPS is investigating in the past few weeks. One happened last month in Burlington involving another senior. The other occurred outside of a Food Basics in Georgetown on Saturday, November 2nd. In each case, the victims had their own jewelry stolen by a stranger attempting to give them fake gold jewelry.
While the style of theft is similar, the suspects are not the same for all three of these occurrences.
Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2216.
