What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – The history behind Milton’s Beam Court and Yukon Court
Each week, Milton Historical Society President John Challinor explains the origins of local street names. We covered Beam Court and Yukon Court this week. There will be two more streets next week!
Daily WTF – Gross things are falling from the sky in one B.C. community
Something is raining down upon residents of Shuswap, British Columbia, and it isn’t water. These residents are taking legal action against a local compost facility. That’s because they keep finding garbage and animal parts littered all over the area. This is due to birds getting into the facility and taking what they can find before flying away. Sometimes the birds will grab meat chunks that are then being dropped as they fly over neighbourhoods. You’ve heard of raining cats and dogs, well, in this town, it’s raining cows and chickens.
Daily Did You Know – Milton Public Library providing orange shirt pins this week
Next Monday will be the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a day to honour and reflect on the injustices caused by the residential school system. It’s also Orange Shirt Day, a day that remembers the story of Phyllis Jack Webstad. More than 60 years ago, she was taken to a residential school at just six years old. Her grandmother saved up and bought her an orange shirt to wear. The shirt was taken from her and never given back. Leading up to the day, the Milton Public Library is inviting residents to their branches to pick up supplies and instructions to make an orange shirt pin to wear on Monday. Supplies are limited and will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis for those between the ages of 13 and 17.
Annual Plane Pull event brings in $200,000 for local United Way
Residents lined up at the Hamilton airport to pull a plane last weekend! Groups of 15 tugged on a rope to help raise money for United Way Halton & Hamilton. All in all, they brought in more than $200,000. United Way Halton & Hamilton also announced the launch of their 2024-2025 campaign, with a goal of $12.5 million. All of that money is going back into the community by supporting local groups and organizations. Also returning this year is the Local Love Community Match. This feature means that every $4 donated, an extra $1 will be matched by a group of donors. That means your love can stretch a little bit further. You can donate now!
Vince Carter to be 1st player in Raptors’ 30-year history to have number retired
The most famous Toronto Raptor of all time will get quite the acknowledgement this coming NBA season. It’s been announced by the franchise that Vince Carter will have his #15 jersey retired and hung in the rafters by the Toronto Raptors. He’s the first Raptor in their 30 year history to have this honour. I should mention that without Vince, we probably don’t have basketball in Canada anymore. He kind of saved the Raptors from moving away during a time where the Vancouver Grizzlies were so bad they moved to Memphis. Like, Vince Carter was an ICON in basketball. But, he also quit on the team, pretended to be hurt for half a season, played horribly and tanked his trade value. So, I personally will say that I can’t stand the guy… But it’s cool that he’s getting this done. Now if only they brought back those purple jerseys full time…
GOOD NEWS – Pesto the baby penguin is already taller than his parents. Now he’s a social media star
A gigantic baby penguin has become a viral social media megastar. Pesto the King Penguin still has his brown baby fur, but despite his young age, he’s already taller than both of his parents. The Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium in Australia says he measures in at three feet tall already and about 50 pounds, and his current diet is definitely promoting his growth. Right now, Pesto gets fed about 30 fish a day – twice as many as the average adult penguin. It’s believed that once he gets his adult coat he’ll start to slim down a little bit, but he’s still expected to be the largest penguin at the aquarium, which will bring attention and funding to the organization, which will help fund the care and treatment for the animals… And that’s some good news!
New Shania Twain Musical Set To Hit Stage Next Year
The Twain Station is about to make a stop on Broadway! According to reports, Shania Twain’s music is being turned into a musical. The new production is currently being worked on and is set to take the stage in late 2025. It’ll feature some of her biggest hits, including ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman!’, and ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’, with the inspiration being the ABBA musical ‘Mamma Mia’. Fingers crossed this actually happens, because I think we all need more Shania Twain in our lives.
Taylor Swift Toronto concerts suite prices
In just under two months, the biggest star on the planet will be in Toronto. Taylor Swift is finally bringing her Eras Tour to the Great White North, with a stop at the Rogers Centre from November 14th to the 16th. The concerts have long been sold out… For the most part! There’s still one suite available for the Saturday show. Can you guess how much this suite is being sold for? It’s roughly 20 tickets worth, plus the bonus of it being a suite and everything that comes with it. Well, if your guess was $96,000 – then you’d be correct! So, if you have nearly six figures to spend on concert tickets, then you can see Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams live at the Rogers Centre this November. Have fun!
Add this 5-minute routine to your day for better energy, concentration and sleep
If you’re the kind of person who hits the 2pm slump, you’re not alone! That said, there are ways around this midday down period, and they don’t have to involve caffeine. Experts recommend you add chair yoga to your daily routine! You may or may not have heard of chair yoga, which I guess the perception is that it’s for older people, but that’s not necessarily the case. So, in case you don’t know, chair yoga focuses on flexibility and mobility from the seated position, which is great for people who sit at a desk all day! Studies have shown that people who incorporate chair yoga into their daily 9-5 have reported feeling less stressed, less sore, and more energized. So, if you’re looking for a new pick-me-up, try to do some yoga poses from your work chair. Just five minutes is needed and it SHOULD improve your day!
