School’s back!
Whether it’s today or tomorrow, kids are returning to the classroom this week. For some, this is a great moment! You get to see your friends again and learn new things.
Thing is, for some kids, this is a sad week! A lot of kids don’t enjoy going to school every day; having to get up early; having to study, read books, and write tests.
So, I’ll ask you:
What was your favourite subject in school?
Which subject could you always depend on? Even when you didn’t want to go school that morning, at least you still had that class? Was in gym class? Art class? Maybe it was math or science?
Let me know!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – New program for lung cancer treatment opens at local hospital
A new program has opened up at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, and it’s one that’s close to my heart. They’ve launched the Lung Diagnostic Assessment Program. It’ll give residents some local ease of mind as they can now get assessed and treated for lung issues close to home. My mom died of lung cancer in 2021, right in the middle of the pandemic. I’ve wondered since that maybe she could have gotten better and more immediate treatment if the circumstances had been different, and a program like this will definite help others moving forward – which is great!
Daily WTF – Woman Started Wildfires to Flirt With Firefighters in Greece
It’s a tough dating scene in 2024. I’m forever grateful I met my wife at the end of high school because I don’t think I could possibly survive in the modern dating scene. For one Greek woman, it’s gotten so bad that she’s had to get creative with how she meets men. Thing is, one might also interpret her creativity as insanity. The woman reportedly started multiple wildfires in Greece, and her reasoning was that she enjoyed seeing the firefighters and flirting with them. The unnamed woman has been arrested, charged, and sentenced to three years in prison, where I’m sure she’ll be able to meet lots of like minded people. There’s plenty of fish in the scene, and quite a few in fish tanks.
Daily Did You Know – Cellphone and vaping ban starts next week for Ontario schools
A bit of a reminder that, yes, school starts this week. Also starting this week is the new cellphone ban across Ontario schools. We touched on this last week, but here’s what to expect: Students up to grade six are not allowed a cellphone in the classroom whatsoever. Students in grades 7-12 are allowed to have them in between classes and on lunch breaks, but not in class. For younger parents, this is pretty similar to what you might have had ten or so years ago in school. If you’re wondering why this ban is necessary? Well, I hate to sound like an old man when I say this, but I’ve seen it first hand when doing presentations at schools, KIDS CAN’T STAY OFF THEIR PHONES. They’re on them all class nowadays. So, unless the lesson requires them to have a phone on them, then they won’t. If you need to get ahold of your kid and they’re in class, just like your parents did before you, contact the school. If your kid is on break, they’ll see your messages.
Here’s where you should (and should not) swim in Halton (August 30th)
The Halton Region says most of the beaches in the area have REMAINED safe for swimming. If you’re looking to cool down from this hot summer, then you can try heading to a local beach. The Region routinely samples the water to make sure they are safe for visitors. Nine beaches were checked, with EIGHT being determined to be safe for swimming. That includes Milton’s Kelso Beach and their new waterpark. You are cautioned that things can change day-to-day and even hour-to-hour thanks to rainfall and other factors. The rule they have is if you can’t see your feet while standing in waist high water as an adult, don’t go swimming!
GOOD NEWS – Runner raced against great-grandson on 85th birthday
You’d like to imagine that as you get older, you’re still taking time to enjoy the things you love doing. Hobbies are very important, and they help keep us busy the older we get. We might even dream of sharing these hobbies with our grandchildren and even great-grandchildren, should we be so lucky. For Eric Hughes, he has volunteered and participated at more than 500 Parkruns in his time. The regular 5km runs take place all over the world, and he enjoys seeing the young people come out and take part. On his 85th birthday, Hughes’ great-grandson surprised him and raced alongside him for the whole event… And that’s some good news!
Chestnut beats Kobayashi, sets new world record
The hot dog GOAT is back! Many people were disappointed on July 4th that Joey Chestnut was not going to take part in the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition. He had just recently signed an exclusive deal with another hot dog company, and was no longer invited despite being the world record holder and 16-time World Champion. So, to make up for it, Chestnut partnered with Netflix to hold his own hot dog eating competition, as he elected to compete directly with his greatest rival, Kobayashi. That contest aired live on Netflix yesterday, and people went nuts as Chestnut broke his own record, eating 83 hot dogs in just ten minutes time. You can stream ‘Unfinished Beef’ right now on Netflix. I’ll ask you: how many hot dogs could you eat in ten minutes? I am both a big eater and a fast eater, and I still think I could only do 15… 83 is ridiculous!
‘One Tree Hill’ to return for Netflix sequel with original cast
Get ready to hear this song a thousand more times. One of the biggest shows of the 2000s is set to return as One Tree Hill is reportedly getting a sequel series on Netflix. This isn’t a new thing for Netflix, as they also decided to bring back shows like Full House and That 70’s Show with Fuller House and That 90’s Show. But, they’ll now be taking us back to Tree Hill, North Carolina, where a group of friends went through high school drama, and then continued that drama into parenthood. Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton and Daneel Ackles are set to return as their characters. No word on any other actors at this point, and a timeline is still being figured out. What’s great is they already have the name for the series: Two Tree Hill! (I’m joking)
B.C. woman who sought $5K from neighbour over noise ordered to pay $50 for nuisance
It’s always important to be self aware and think to yourself, “maybe I’M being the bad guy here…” For one woman from British Columbia, she should’ve had that thought. She and her downstairs neighbour don’t quite get along. She tried to take this person to court for making too much noise, wanting $5000 in damages. Once the dust settled, the court ruled that she was actually the one at fault and had to deal with any noise, as well as pay $50 for being a nuisance. If I was that neighbour, I’d use the $50 to buy some new albums and play them JUST A LITTLE TOO LOUD… I feel like that’d be an appropriate use of the money.
