School is almost here!
Both the Halton District School Board (HDSB) and the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) will have their first day of the school year on Wednesday, September 4th.
Today is a PA Day for both local school boards.
Ahead of the first day of school, the HDSB has issued the following message to students and residents:
“The Halton District School Board (HDSB) looks forward to welcoming approximately 67,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 students on the first day of school on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024.
“Tuesday, Sept. 3 is a PA Day and staff across the HDSB will be engaged in professional development to further strengthen skills in their roles to bring quality education to students.
“The HDSB’s 2,915 elementary teachers, 1,407 secondary teachers and 2,610 non-teaching and support staff, as well as more than 200 principals and vice-principals have been busy outfitting classrooms, cleaning buildings and organizing schedules in preparation for a productive, engaging and fulfilling school year.
“The HDSB is proud to welcome students, families and staff to Cedar Ridge Public School, a new elementary school in Milton. The school will accommodate more than 750 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The three-storey accessible school will feature innovative teaching layouts, air conditioning with individual classroom controls, double gym, bus lay-by and student drop-off area. It also has five childcare rooms which will accommodate 88 students.
“Over the last 12 months, the HDSB has completed almost $30 million in capital renewal and maintenance across the region including new roofing, windows, electrical, mechanical, building automation, accessibility and paving upgrades. More than $170 million of new school construction is approved and in design or construction. All of this work is in addition to summer cleaning and preventative maintenance work completed in preparation for the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
“To make the beginning of a new school year as smooth as possible, parents/guardians can visit the HDSB Welcome to a New School Year webpage for helpful tips and resources including links to information on transportation, before and after school care, mental health and well-being resources and more.”
The HCDSB is also looking to remind students of the changes in policy for the new school year. That includes:
- Cellphone ban
- Social media restriction
- Vaping ban

In Milton, Town Councillor for Ward 3, Adil Khalqi will be at Irma Coulson Public School on the first day of school handing out free coffee and timbits. He’s also hoping to connect with parents and school staff.
“I’m hoping to meet with lots of parents, and have some meaningful conversations about our community and to reach out to my residents in a way where these discussions can easily take place,” Khalqi says in an email.
Have a great first week back!
