Milton's GO station building
SECOND UPDATE
Trains are reportedly back up and running in both Milton and Hamilton as of this morning.
FIRST UPDATE (Published on Friday, August 23rd at 4:35 a.m.)
The federal government has stepped in and ordered an arbitration agreement to take place between Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City, and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union.
Metrolinx had cancelled the Milton GO on Thursday morning, along with the Hamilton line, after a potential strike had been rumoured this week. This left many residents and commuters scrambling to find new routes to work in the morning.
A third-party arbitrator will now decide on a new collective agreement. The parties involved will have to accept the agreement, under Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to direct the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), which is to “assist the parties in settling the outstanding terms of their collective agreements by imposing final binding arbitration.”
Until the new agreement is signed, the current agreement is being extended.
A timeline for the agreement, as well as when railways will open, has not yet been provided.
