A study found that having songs stuck in your head can actually be a positive!
Turns out it can be beneficial for singers. The study was looking at people dealing with “earworms,” the term used for getting a song or saying stuck in your head. It found that nearly half of the people being looked at were actually mimicking the songs in perfect pitch! Even better, 2/3 were only slightly off!
What does that mean? Well, essentially, people were unlocking a hidden talent of perfect pitch just because they couldn’t get, like, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ by Journey out of their head.
What was the last song you had stuck in your head? At the food drive yesterday, all day, I was singing ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ to myself. I don’t think I sing it as well as John Denver, though.
Let me know!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – You can “cram” a Halton Police cruiser with food donations this weekend
If you’ve ever wanted to “cram” a police cruiser, you’ll have your chance this weekend! The Halton Police are holding their annual fundraiser. On Saturday, officers will be in the parking lot of the Longo’s at 2900 Walkers Line in Burlington, collecting food and personal hygiene donations for the Burlington Food Bank.
Daily WTF – Kevin Spacey won’t leave Baltimore mansion, buyer says
Actor Kevin Spacey is starting to hit rock bottom. He was a central figure in the ‘Me Too’ movement, losing his role ‘House of Cards’ and being essentially blacklisted from future productions. With his acting career burned to the ground, he isn’t making nearly as much money as he was previously. This led to him being unable to afford the $20,000 monthly mortgage payments for his Baltimore mansion, which has now been auctioned off. Thing is, he’s refusing to leave the building. He’s reportedly asking the buyer for six months. Spacey’s reps have denied the reports. It’s unclear what will happen, but it seems like everything for Spacey has very much tumbled down like a house of cards.
Daily Did You Know – Ontario Premier Doug Ford holding festival in Milton
FordFest is coming to Milton! The annual festival is typically held in Premier Doug Ford’s home riding of Etobicoke, but it’ll be happening in Milton tonight. Ford will be there, along with Milton’s MPP Zee Hamid. There’ll be free food, music, and rides. That’s all happening this today at Country Heritage Park, starting at 5pm.
All Hands on Deck Food Drive returns to John’s No Frills
We had our 6th annual ‘All Hands on Deck’ food drive yesterday! We were collecting food donations for Food4Kids Halton at John’s No Frills. We’re still waiting on the exact amount raised, but we know it’s in the thousands of dollars-worth. Thank you to everyone who came helped out! Thank you to the Milton Menace, who show up every year to lift the bins for us. Thank you to Wallace Chevrolet for providing us with the truck. Thank you to John and his team for always being game for this event every summer. And thank you to Food4Kids Halton (Jennifer, Stacey, and the gang) for being such awesome recipients and running a great organization! We’ll provide an update on the totals in the coming days, but until then, we can look forward to next year!
Registration open for local Citizen Police Academy course
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like working for the Halton Police, you can take a course that dives into all of that! The HRPS has spots open for their Citizen Police Academy course this fall. It’s nine-weeks, and will include classroom work and live demonstrations, providing a look behind the scenes and at the officers who work there. Just don’t expect it to be like the movies.
GOOD NEWS – Baby born in cinema foyer leaves family in disbelief
Labour can be a tricky thing. For some moms, the moment could come at anytime, and for one woman in the UK, that moment was at the movie theatre. The family were at the theatre to watch a movie when the pregnant mom went into labour while watching ‘Sing 2’. They tried rushing her out of the building, got as far as the foyer, and that’s where they stayed. Within ten minutes, they had a healthy baby girl. Emergency services arrived and helped with the process. The manager of the theatre was so moved by the moment that they gave the baby girl a lifetime membership, meaning she’ll get to watch any movie at that theatre for free… And that is some good news!
Local NHL player Carter Verhaeghe to bring Stanley Cup to Waterdown
If you’re looking for something to do on Monday, there’s going to be a big gathering down the road in Waterdown. I actually just moved from Waterdown back to Georgetown, so I’ll probably stop by and see some friends. What’s the big deal about this gathering? Well, it’ll be hosted by hometown boy Carter Verhaeghe and he’ll have Lord Stanley’s Cup there with him. Yes, if you’ve ever wanted to see the cup in person (outside of the NHL Hall of Fame in Toronto) then Monday in Waterdown will be your chance. Maybe you’ll get a chance to drink out of it, who knows!
Wacky foods on the CNE menu
We’re closing in on the end of summer, which can only mean one thing here in the GTA. Yes, the Canadian National Exhibit, the CNE, or just ‘The Ex’ opens today! There’s the rides, the games, but most importantly, the food! Here are the foods making the headlines this year:
- Wasabi Ice Cream
- Kool Aid Fried Chicken
- Butter Chicken Corn Dog
- Footlong samosa stuffed with potatoes and peas
- 38-centimetre doughnut weighing nearly a kilogram
- Whole deep-fried soft-shell crab on a stick
It’s always a must attend event every year. It’ll be on at Toronto’s Exhibition Place until September 2nd.
5 charged in Matthew Perry’s death, including his assistant and 2 doctors
A lot of people could be in a lot of trouble in the fallout of the death of Matthew Perry. The Friends actor died last fall from a high amount of ketamine in his system while in his hot tub. There were rumblings all year about possible criminal charges being laid, and those rumours came true this week. Five people have been charged in connection Perry’s death, including two doctors and Perry’s assistant. They’re being accused of running a crime network that profits off drug addiction. So, things are messy right now, and they’re likely going to get even messier. We’ll see where it goes.
