A fatal collision in Milton is now being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
The crash happened on early on Saturday, March 30th at the intersection of Sixth Line and Derry Road in Milton. Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, including an 18-year-old Milton man and a 16-year-old Brampton girl in one vehicle, as well as a 26-year-old Milton man in the other vehicle.
On Monday, July 22nd, the SIU was notified of this case by Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) and, based on the information received, the SIU has now invoked its mandate.
The SIU serves as a neutral party when investigating police conduct in cases that result in at least one death. Here’s more from the SIU website:
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
The SIU has assigned four investigators, a collision reconstructionist and one forensic investigator to the case.
Two subject officials and six witness officials have been designated at this time.
Anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, is urged to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online.
