The Milton Public Library (MPL) has received $25,000 from the Government of Canada as part of its annual New Horizons for Seniors Grant.
In 2022, and again in 2023, the MPL received this grant and used the money for its ‘Seniors Translation for Newcomers’ project. It was completed earlier this year.
This year, the grant will be used for the ‘Engaging Senior Artists’ project, which will provide senior artists in the community with opportunities to express themselves, share their wisdom, and contribute to the cultural enrichment of Milton. The project will include a series of workshops, artist talks, drop-in sharing events, and public exhibitions, allowing senior artists to showcase their talents and connect with the broader community.
In a release, the MPL says they’re looking to make sure local senior artists are part of every aspect of the project.
“[We] will collaborate with local artists and engage them as mentors and leaders. Seniors will actively participate in the planning, development, and implementation of the project, ensuring that their voices are heard and their skills are valued. Through these collaborative efforts, MPL aims to reduce social isolation among seniors, promote lifelong learning, and foster a sense of belonging within our community.”
They are inviting the public to fill out applications for the position of Artist in Residence as part of the project. The Artist in Residence will work closely with senior artists to facilitate workshops, mentorship sessions, and public exhibitions. This is a unique opportunity for experienced artists to make a meaningful impact in our community while collaborating with talented senior artists.
