Daily WTF – Ghanaian activist hugs over 1,100 trees in an hour to set record
We have the world’s biggest tree hugger! 29-year-old Abubakar Tahiru hugged a total of 1,123 trees in one hour, which averages out to almost 19 trees hugged per minute. The Ghanaian activist says he grew up farming and has a passion for the environment. He wanted to do something that combined his passion for trees and also got some media attention for his cause. Tahiru did the tree hugging at the Tuskegee National Forest in Alabama. He said he was pretty tired by the end of the hour because he was also fasting for Ramadan, and boy does he ever look tired. The photo on the Guinness World Record website makes him look like he just ran a marathon. Congrats to him, and hopefully he got some rest!

New plan to limit cellphone use, ban vaping in all Ontario schools
Ontario schools are going to crack down on cellphones and vaping in the classroom. Education Minister Stephen Lecce held a press conference yesterday morning to share the news. Starting in the fall, students in kindergarten to grade six will be required to have their cellphones on silent and put away. For students grade seven and up, cellphones will be banned during class time. Social media platforms will also be banned across school networks and devices. Teachers are going to get training leading up to this new mandate. There will also be a ban on vaping devices, as well as cannabis, nicotine and tobacco products. Where do you stand on these announcements? Should cellphones be banned in the classroom? Should vaping devices be banned? Let me know!
GOOD NEWS – Rookie police officer has ‘surreal’ reunion with retired lieutenant who saved his life when he was a baby
Here’s a positive story for you: a rookie officer met up with the retired cop who saved his life as a baby. This could be a movie! People are always inspired by their heroes, and in this case, Matthew Hegedus-Stewart was inspired by Gene Eyster. When Matthew was a baby, he was found abandoned in a box just days before Christmas. Three kids notified Eyster of what they found, and he jumped into action. Now, 24 years later, the affectionately nicknamed “Baby Jesus” had the chance to work under Eyster as a new police officer. The retired cop says he always wondered what happened to that little baby that he saved all those years ago, and now he knows – the baby is working to save lives just like Eyster saved his, and that’s some good news.
Ohio company to sell a ‘flamethrower-wielding robot dog’ called the Thermonator
Would you like to buy a flamethrower-wielding robot dog? If the answer is yes, it can be yours for just over $10,000. Throwflame out of Ohio are selling what they call ‘The Thermonator’. It’s a four-legged robot that has a flamethrower on its back. It features a 30ft firing range, light detection and range mapping, as well as laser sighting. Again, it’s a robot dog with a flamethrower. Why would you want this? Well, they said it’s great at clearing snow off of driveways, wildlife control, and it’s just flat out entertaining to look at. Considering it’s cheaper than a brand new Toyota Corolla, there are probably worse things to spend your money on, and in this case, you get a robot dog with a flamethrower on its back. If I won the lottery, this is for sure the kind of nonsense I’d get talked into buying… And I’d buy it with a smile!
Mock emergency training preparing Halton hospital for disaster
A local hospital was put through the ringer last week. They had a mock disaster as they practiced emergency preparations. In this mock disaster, a theoretical truck collision occurred and caused a chemical leak. This brought more than 75 mock patients to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital as staff worked through the steps to get everyone checked out. I should say, this was done separate to the daily work being done at the hospital, so actual patients were not affected. But, according to Halton Healthcare, everything went well! So, just know, if you’re involved in a chemical leak, and you get sent to Oakville Trafalgar, you’re likely in good hands.
