This week, my best friends will celebrate their first baby turning 9 3/4 months old.
If that sounds like a weird thing to celebrate, it is!
They’re both Harry Potter fans, and so in honour of Platform 9 3/4, they will have their baby pick her Hogwarts House. She’ll be placed in front of four stuffed animals that represent each Hogwarts House. She’ll be tasked with crawling up and picking her favourite.
They’ll also do a similar activity on her first birthday for Pokemon!
Did you do any fun, unique or odd celebrations for your kid? Anything stick out as unusual, or did you keep it to just birthdays and holidays?
Let me know!

ICYMI – Milton tennis court will close for improvements
If you’re a local tennis player, you might have to find a new court this spring. The Town of Milton says they’ll be closing down the tennis courts at Optimist Park this week. It won’t be for long, they just need to get through phase one of improvements. Phase two will take place at the end of summer, potentially beginning of fall. There are several tennis courts around town, so if you want to play this spring, you can head to the courts near the Bronte Meadows Park or at Rotary Park in the mean time.
Daily WTF – Beard championship creates a beard chain as long as two blue whales
Every year, Beard Team USA organizes the National Beard and Moustache Championships. At the most recent event in Daytona Beach, 89 people joined together to create a beard chain. They tied their facial hair together, and lined up. This gathering extended for 60 meters, roughly the length of a 20-storey building or two blue whales tip-to-tail. This set the world record for the longest beard chain ever. I cannot imagine it was a fun experience untying these beards from one another… Probably a few hairs lost in the process.
Daily Did You Know – The history behind Milton’s Peregrine Way and Whitney Terrace
Each week, Milton Historical Society President John Challinor provides the origins of select street names around town. This week, we have one of Canada’s earliest official leaders and a man known for his tragic death instead of his achievements. We’ll have two more streets next week!
United Way Halton & Hamilton raises $12.5 million to help the community
Months ago, United Way Halton and Hamilton announced their fundraising campaign, with their highest goal yet. On Thursday night, at their Evening of Celebration, UWHH shared that they had finally reached that goal, collecting $12.5 million. That money will now go off and help local organizations, groups, and residents in need. You can still donate if you’d like!
Vinyl records outsell CDs for the second year running
It seems after all these years, vinyl is still cool. They became the trendy thing for younger people, but it seems they’ve stuck around as more than just a fad. In a digital world of streaming, people are still going out and buying albums, as for the second year in a row, vinyl has outsold CDs. This is also the second time since 1987 this has happened, meaning vinyl has truly outlasted other physical media. Do you still buy vinyl? What was the last record you purchased? Let me know!
Woman returns Costco couch after 2 years, tests limits of return policy: “I just didn’t like it anymore”
When did you buy your couch? Would you say it hasn’t lived up to the expectations you had when you bought it? Well, you might be able to return, even after all these years! A woman went viral on TikTok when she posted a video detailing how she was able to return her couch to Costco two years after she first bought it. She says she didn’t have the original receipt, but did remember the exact date in which she purchased it. This allowed the cashier to go through the system, process the return, and the woman got a full refund. TWO YEARS! She ended the video by recommending everyone buy their furniture from Costco because as she’s shown, you can always just return it.
Non-browning apple developed in Summerland receives Health Canada approval
If you’re the kind of person who can’t get passed the looks of a browning apple, you’re in luck! Health Canada has approved an apple that does not brown over time. The Arctic Gala, Arctic Granny, Arctic Golden and Arctic Fuji apple varieties resist browning caused by bruising and slicing. This means they will become less damaged through the supply chain, and it boosts to the shelf life of the sliced apples to four weeks. Now if only the could work on an Arctic Avocado… A man can dream!
O.J. Simpson’s Book If I Did It Hits No. 1 on Multiple Amazon Bestseller Lists After His Death
With the death of OJ Simpson last week, people are reading up on the man infamously accused of murdering his wife and her friend, Ron Goldman. He was acquitted in a very public trial in the mid-90s. In 2007, Simpson released a book that detailed how he would have actually murdered the two of them. Despite the morbid book concept, it quickly became a bestseller at the time, and eventually, a judged ruled the rights to the book were to be sent to the Goldman family after they won a civil trial against Simpson. It appears as though Simpson never gave them their money, as when he died, he was reportedly in $114 million of debt to the Goldman family. People are now buying the book again, as it has shot back up the book charts. The money now goes directly to the family, so, by all means, buy that weird, weird, WEIRD book.
Poland’s kids rejoice over new rules against homework
It’s like a Disney movie that pits children versus teachers, and in this case, the students won! Poland has ruled to ban homework from their schools. It will no longer be handed out to students in grades 1-3. For grades 4-8, homework will be optional and have no effect on overall grading. The country says the move was done to modernize education, putting less of an emphasis on memorization and homework, and moving towards more critical thinking and creativity. What do you think? Should homework be banned from schools? Let me know!
‘Golden Bachelor’ couple Gerry and Theresa divorce after 3 months together
Maybe reality dating shows don’t work, regardless of age! When the Golden Bachelor was announced, a lot of people were optimistic that this could be the start of something sweet! Gerry Turner was widower in his 70s, convinced by his children to give dating another chance. He applied for the first season of The Golden Bachelor, which took the concept of The Bachelor, and applied it to people in their 60s and 70s. The show was a hit, and ended with a TV wedding. Three months later, the Golden Couple have announced their divorce. Reports say it came down to deciding on where to live together. The two were steadfast on where they wanted to live, and neither budged. That led to them realizing this probably wasn’t the fit they thought it’d be when they were on the show. We’ll try again in a few months, as The Golden Bachelorette is set to release it’s first episode on September 1st… And boy, you bet I’ll be watching.
