South Simcoe Police the fraudsters will show up at your door with a “Time Limited” deal.
Investigators say these scams typically involve individuals “posing” as legitimate contractors, offering substandard services at a discounted rate.
Police say do your research to avoid falling victim.
Tactics include:
- Unsolicited door-to-door offers for driveway paving or repair services.
- Pressure tactics such as limited time offers or claims of using leftover materials from a nearby job.
- Demanding full payment upfront or accepting only cash payments.
- Contractor starting limited work with promises to come back months later.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, residents are advised to:
- Research and verify the credentials of any contractor before agreeing to any work.
- Obtain multiple quotes from reputable paving companies ensuring you are aware of the going rate and scope of work required.
- Ask for references, ask to see a job that they have completed locally and check online reviews from previous customers.
- Obtain a written quote or contract that lays out the complete scope of work.
- Avoid making any payments until the work has been completed to satisfaction and according to the agreed-upon terms.
