There could be name changes coming to a pair of ball diamonds within the Milton Community Sports Park.
Currently located alongside the Milton Sports Centre on Santa Maria Boulevard, the Milton Community Sports Park has two areas that are generically named ‘Milton Community Park #1’ and ‘Milton Community Park #2’. It was proposed by Milton Town Councillor for Ward 2 John Challinor, and seconded by Milton Regional Councillor for Ward 1 Colin Best, that these baseball diamonds been named after longtime residents.
Challinor also serves as the President of the Milton Historical Society. He proposes that:
- Milton Community Park #1 be named after Peter McMullen
- “the late Miltonian helped to pioneer the development of minor baseball in Milton, served as the President of the Ontario Baseball Association and also served as President of the Halton County Baseball Association,” reads the notice of motion.
- Milton Community Park #2 be named after Glenn Turner
- “the life-long Miltonian helped to re-establish the Milton Red Sox Baseball Club, maintained Milton’s premier baseball diamond for 33 years, managed the community’s premier inter-county baseball team for 37 years and helped the Town of Milton design its premier baseball diamonds at Milton Community Park,” reads the notice of motion.
During the Town Council meeting held on Monday, March 4th, Councillor Challinor noted that this kind of motion is not common, especially here in Milton. The last time this kind of proposal was made, it was for the John Tonelli Sports Centre, located at 217 Laurier Avenue. Staff noted that “Tonelli” is a major facility, while these parks would be considered minor facilities. Not including sponsorship naming rights of minor facilities, this would be a first for Milton.
The motion was carried by Council, and Town staff have been directed to proceed in accordance with Policy 69: ‘Naming and Re-Naming Municipal Facilities’. Challinor says the matter will go up for public debate before a decision is made final.
