How often are you sitting?
A study says your desk job and all that Netflix binging could be doing some serious damage to your health. It found that older women who sit for 11.7 hours or more daily saw their risk of death jump by 30% – and that’s even if they exercised vigorously!
Researchers at the University of California-San Diego tracked 6,489 women through monitors over an eight year span. The women ranged in age from 63-99. They found that sedentary lifestyles (often sitting) lower muscle contractions, blood flow, and glucose metabolism.
Ultimately, lots of sitting = bad news!
How often would you say you’re sitting throughout the day? Maybe it’s time for a change-up!
Let me know!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Here’s how the Milton real estate market has changed since 2013
If you’re struggling to enter the real estate market in Milton, you’re not alone. Data from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation shows just how much things have changed since 2013. In the last decade, house prices have doubled, with the majority of properties going from being less than $500,000 to more than $1,000,000. And that’s the case for pretty well all of the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area. I knew I should’ve bought a house when I was in high school. How foolish was I?!
Daily WTF – A Leap Year Glitch Broke Self-Pay Gas Station Pumps Across New Zealand
Remember in the year 1999 when everyone was freaking out about Y2K? The computers were going to glitch with the start of the new millennium – causing rockets to launch off, prison gates to automatically open, and everyone’s bank accounts to empty. Well, it never happened. Cut to February 29th, 2024, and we finally have a Y2K-esque glitch! Pumps at New Zealand gas stations were unprepared for Leap Day, with their internal systems breaking due to the normally non-existent day. The outage lasted for more than ten hours as crews worked to fix the pumps that forced many shutdowns across the country. They now have four years to prepare for the NEXT Leap Day… Something tells me that stuff will still go wrong.
Ontario PC Party announces Zeeshan Hamid as Milton candidate
We finally have a name! Former Milton Councillor Zeeshan Hamid will run in the upcoming Milton by-election for the Ontario PC Party. This by-election is happening after Milton MPP Parm Gill announced his resignation in January as he shifts to run federally in Milton for the Conservatives. Hamid has a history in local politics, serving three terms as a councillor. He recently lost his position after opting to run against Milton Mayor Gord Krantz, losing by just 4% of the vote. No word on who the Liberals will name as a candidate, but rumours are it could be new Leader Bonnie Crombie. We’ll let you know when this by-election is happening when the official date is announced.
Daily Did You Know – The history behind Milton’s Aylmer Crescent and Mulroney Heights
With his passing last week, Milton Historical Society President John Challinor opted to cover a street named after former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. We also have a local road named after a former Lieutenant Governor of Lower Canada who struggled with the incoming rebellion. We’ll have two more streets next week!
Federal Court takes Milton’s side in CN Hub case
Talk about big news! The Federal Court of Canada has ruled in favour of Milton and Halton when it comes to the CN Intermodal Hub. They said “the decisions of the Federal Minister and Cabinet failed to fulfill their duty to protect human health.” Pretty damning, if you ask me. Following this decision, the project cannot proceed without going back to the Federal government for reconsideration, including a full evaluation of the effects of the project. Basically, it’s been delayed, and there’s a chance now that it doesn’t actually happen. Of course, it still might, but things are looking brighter for Milton!
Want to compete at the Olympics? Here’s how you can make Team Canada
If you feel like that you or your child are an elite athlete, test your skills at the Milton Velodrome this weekend. The Canadian Olympic Committee will be in town for their RBC Training Ground program. It’s the first time since 2017 that this program will be in town. They test raw athletes to find an Olympic sport that best fits their skillset, and they develop them to hopefully compete at the Olympics. That starts this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcomed.
‘Dune 2’ jolts sleepy box office with $178.5 million opening
My wife and I went to see the second Dune movie on Friday night. As someone who has read the first book, I can say, they did a pretty good job! It’s less faithful than the first movie, but the movie itself is very well done. It’s also been WIDELY popular, bringing in almost $180 million globally in just a few days. It’s currently on track to be the biggest movie of 2024 as we get ready for blockbuster season. It’s also being very well received, with a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Will you see Dune 2 in theatres – or will you wait for it on streaming?
Laurie Anderson on making an AI chatbot of Lou Reed: ‘I’m totally, 100%, sadly addicted’
It’s going to happen to everyone – so, I want you to imagine that your partner PASSES AWAY. It’s sad, but I’m going somewhere with this. Imagine that happening, and then imagine someone making an artificial intelligence-fueled software that is able to replicate that person’s thoughts, allowing you to have a conversation with them again. If that sounds like a Black Mirror episode, it is! That episode was released in 2013. It’s also happening in real life to musician and artist Laurie Anderson. Her husband, the legendary Lou Reed, passed away more than ten years ago. She’s helped develop a chatbot that has allowed her to speak to Reed, something her friends reportedly “can’t stand.” The vast majority of it is still nonsense, but about 15% of it feels like him, she says, adding that she’s become addicting to using it. How does this make you feel? Would you want to speak to an AI version of your partner? I’d say no, but I can’t imagine how she feels, so maybe it’s a yes…
Canadians react after someone adjusts Barenaked Ladies song for inflation
Since it was released, ‘If I Had a Million Dollars’ has been the theme song for every lottery player ever. The Barenaked Ladies song details what two friends would do if they were to become rich with a million dollars. Thing is – the song was released in 1992. A Canadian Tik-Toker recognized that and decided to make a 2024 cover the song. He converts the original lyrics to make it “If I Had Ten Million Dollars, I could maybe buy you a house,” ending the song with “If I Had Ten Million Dollars, I’d be middle-class.” Needless to say, people online enjoy the cover and have been talking about inflation. What I want to know is: How much would John Merrick’s remains go for in 2024? Surely, owning the grave of the Elephant Man is worth more than $1 million…
McDonald’s debuts 1st-ever beauty collaboration
After announcing a weird ANIME collaboration, McDonald’s will now dip their freshly pedicured toes into the beauty world. If you want a French Manicure, why not also buy some French Fries? McDonald’s has partnered with Nails.INC to sell a line of nail polish and artificial nails. If you’re worried about getting the right colour for you, don’t be! They’ll cost just $8. If they’re not in-store here in Canada, you can buy them online. Have fun!
